The Winter Soldier is a Marvel Comics character primarily associated with Captain America. Born James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, he was Captain America's World War II sidekick.
Presumed dead after a mid-air explosion during the war, Bucky was actually captured by Soviet forces. They brainwashed and cybernetically enhanced him, turning him into a highly skilled assassin known as the Winter Soldier. He was kept in cryogenic stasis between missions, effectively halting his aging.
For decades, the Winter Soldier carried out assassinations and covert operations for the Soviet Union and later, other shadowy organizations. He possessed enhanced strength, speed, reflexes, and a bionic left arm granting him superhuman abilities.
Captain America eventually learned of the Winter Soldier's existence and worked to restore Bucky's memories. Bucky struggled with the atrocities he committed while brainwashed, seeking redemption. He later even took up the mantle of Captain America for a time after Steve Rogers' presumed death.
